What are the 5 Steps to Goal Setting?

So what are the 5 steps to goal setting? Have you ever felt that you have lost your path towards your goals or have forgotten your goals? As I look at my life in retrospection, I have begun to realize that somewhere along the way, I lost my path, straying from my goals. In fact, I know that I have forgotten those goals and stopped setting any new goals for myself. If you are on a similar path, I have some ideas to help fix and achieve goals. In this article, we will discuss what are the 5 steps to goal setting.

Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy.

Set Realistic and Measurable Goals

When you set goals, you have to assess your capabilities and situation. Once you have your goal set, you can break it into smaller activities. This will make your success measurable because the goals are finite and measurable. For instance, a goal to lose weight. You can break it down into losing a set amount of weight every week or month and track your progress at defined periods.

Plan and Organize

Once the goals are quantified, you get a clear picture of what you need to work towards. Based on that, you can have a plan of action and organize your activities around that. In the above example, you can plan your diet and exercise regimen based on your goal weight and schedule.

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.

Steve Jobs

Set a reward for every successful step. Positive reinforcement and rewarding is a proven technique to motivate people to perform better.

Involve Friends/Family

It is ultimately your goal and effort that goes into achieving it. I believe that it is always a good idea to get different perspectives and opinions from close friends or family. You might find a friend with a similar goal, and you can partner with them in working towards achieving it.

The goal you set is, of course, only limited by your imagination. You could, for instance, set goals for your career, for your relationships, for your finances, for contribution, and even for self-growth. The goal itself doesn’t really matter. What matters is that while setting these goals you are able to answer the following three questions:

What specifically do I want?

Why specifically do I want this?

When specifically do I want this?

Maintain/Retain the Goal

The journey doesn’t end when you achieve the goal. You have to keep it. Consider this the beginning of a new journey towards an original purpose. If you have completed losing the weight you wanted, you have to continue maintaining that weight, so you don’t go back to your previous weight.

Remember that not achieving a goal is not the end of the world. You should not get discouraged and stop trying. Give every effort your best and never give up, and success will come to you!

You alone are the judge of your worth and your goal is to discover infinite worth in yourself, no matter what anyone else thinks.

Deepak Chopra
